Authors such as William Least Heat-Moon and Wallace Stegner have explored in their writing the idea of a Deep Map to explore a geographical area in writing. Deep Maps are conceptually designed to layer more than what the eye sees in the mapping process.
For this feldgang activity, mark off a one foot by one foot plot of earth — it could be anywhere — and zoom in with your attention and your noticing to that one small bit of land. We suggest you sit there, and let things settle. Then, begin to notice: what do you see? what do you hear? what do you smell? What does this small bit of soil conjure up for you?
Share your discoveries in whatever form you want — an image, a poem, a list, a narrative, a piece of art. Go small in order to image something larger.
A Feldgang is a close exploration, a quiet deep dive into the world. For CLMOOC, we are using the idea of a Feldgang as our theme.
You can share in your usual places. We invite you to use the #clmooc hashtag on Twitter, or the CLMOOC Facebook group, or share in the CLMOOC Flickr Group, or come into a new space under development called YAP.Net, designed for draft writing and sharing in a safe space. We’ll see you there.
